Lemma

A lemma is the dictionary form of a word. The words "asks", "asked" and "asking" all share the lemma "ask". A lemma lets you count one idea, not many spellings. GRAPE MARS keeps a lemma for each word in a transcript.

Example: You want to know how a teacher asks for help. You search the lemma "ask". The list shows "asks", "asked" and "asking" as one set of hits. A search for the exact form "asks" would miss the other 2.

Why it matters in GRAPE MARS

Tagging reads the transcript and stores the lemma of every word. In the Concordance module you can then search by lemma, and not by exact form. One search gives you every use of a verb or a noun, in all its forms.
