Named entity
A named entity is a word or a group of words that names one thing. People, places, groups and dates are named entities. "Maria", "Valencia" and "March" are named entities. Plain words like "girl" or "town" are not. GRAPE MARS marks whether each word in a transcript names something.
Example: At 07:30 a teacher says "Valencia was the home of Cervantes for a year". GRAPE MARS stores "Valencia" as a place and "Cervantes" as a person. The words "home" and "year" are not named entities. A search for named entities in that lesson returns 2 hits.
Why it matters in GRAPE MARS
Tagging marks the named entities in the transcript for you. In the Concordance module you can then search by named entity in word mode. This helps when you study how a class talks about people, places and dates.
