Getting started

Which email should I use to sign in?

Use the address your invitation was sent to. Test accounts are separate. Read more: Problems signing in.

Why am I signed out after a day?

Remember me is selected for you, and keeps you signed in for 30 days. If you clear it, or use a private window, the sign-in lasts 24 hours. Read more: Problems signing in.

Which browser should I use?

Use a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Phones are not supported, and a tablet is for reading only. Read more: Browsers and devices.

The new features are not there. What do I do?

Your tab is showing an old version of the page. Reload the page. Read more: Browsers and devices.

I closed the tour. Can I open it again?

The tour shows once per browser. To see it again, clear this site's data in your browser. Read more: Problems with annotations.

Something is wrong and this page did not help. Who do I ask?

Contact support. Include the page address, the date and time, your browser and its version, and the exact words on the screen. Read more: Contact support.

Videos

Why is my file refused before the upload starts?

GRAPE MARS accepts MP4, MOV and WebM up to 2 GB. Other files are refused. Read more: Problems uploading.

The upload waits at "Optimising video for upload". Is it stuck?

Your browser makes files over 500 MB smaller first. That takes minutes. Read more: Problems uploading.

How do I bring my old GRAPE project across?

Open your project list and click Import Legacy Project. Point it at your old GRAPE folder. Read more: Problems importing.

The video will not play after an import. Why?

An import brings your annotations across, but not always the media file. Read more: Problems importing.

Why does the spacebar not pause the video?

Your cursor is in a text box. Click the video first. Read more: Problems playing video.

Annotating

Can I put 2 annotations at the same moment?

Yes. Open the Library Manager and click the icon on that track row; its tooltip reads Allow overlapping. Read more: Problems with annotations.

Why does dragging an annotation feel jumpy?

Edges snap to nearby edges within 8 pixels. Zoom the timeline in. Read more: Problems with annotations.

I deleted an annotation by mistake. Can I undo it?

Yes. Press Ctrl+Z, or Cmd+Z on a Mac, or click Undo in the toolbar. Read more: Problems with annotations.

Why is every track the same colour?

Colour belongs to the annotation type, not the track. A new library uses one default colour. Read more: Problems with the library.

Where are the tracks at the bottom of the timeline?

The track list is longer than the panel. Scroll inside the track panel on the left. Read more: Problems with annotations.

How do I delete a track or a group?

Open the menu on that row in the Library Manager. The panel header has none. Read more: Problems with the library.

How many levels can my library hold?

3: group, track and sub-type. You add sub-types from the track row. Read more: Problems with the library.

Why are all my old annotations under one speaker?

Speaker tabs came later. Every earlier annotation moved to Speaker 1. Read more: Problems with annotations.

Is there a save button?

No. Autosave stores each change as you make it. Read more: the guide "How saving works".

Transcripts and tagging

Do I need an AI key to transcribe?

No. GRAPE MARS runs transcription on its own service. Read more: Problems with transcription.

Why did transcription fail on my video?

The audio track is over 10 MB. That is the limit. Read more: Problems with transcription.

Why does my transcript show lines instead of words?

The panel keeps the old transcript until you reopen the video. Word-level timing then appears. Read more: Problems with transcription.

Which languages can GRAPE MARS tag?

3: Español, Català / Valencià and English. Set the language on the video first. Read more: Tagging.

Why does word search find nothing?

Word search reads tagged transcripts only. At the top of the transcript panel, click the chip that reads Set language. Read more: Problems with tagging.

Why will tagging not start?

The video needs a transcript and a declared language. At the top of the transcript panel, click the chip that reads Set language. Read more: Problems with tagging.

Tagging looks stuck. How long should it take?

Most videos finish in under 1 minute. A job over 10 minutes counts as failed. Read more: Problems with tagging.

How do I find every place a word is said?

Add the Concordance module, then set Searching for to Words. It reads tagged videos only. Read more: Concordance.

Analysis

I opened a workspace and do not know what to do.

A workspace is a page you build. Click Add your first module. Then set its scope. Read more: Problems in a workspace.

Why can I not add another module?

Drop the module on the large empty area, not on the palette or the edge. You can also click + on the module in the palette. Read more: Problems in a workspace.

Why is the agreement module empty?

Cohen's kappa needs 2 coders on 1 video. Check the scope. Read more: Problems in a workspace.

Why is the heatmap or the comparison module empty?

The co-occurrence heatmap needs 2 annotation types. Cross-video comparison needs 2 videos. Read more: Problems in a workspace.

Does my old analysis link still work?

Yes. It now opens the workspace list for that project. Read more: Problems in a workspace.

Sharing and exporting

I asked for Excel and got a Word file. Why?

Generate report always makes a Word file. For a spreadsheet, click Export data, then click Excel. In a workspace, click Export. Read more: Problems exporting.

Why does my spreadsheet put everything in one column?

Your program opened the CSV with the wrong separator. Import it and choose the comma. Read more: Problems exporting.

Will ELAN open my export?

The file follows the ELAN format. Tell support if ELAN refuses the file. Read more: Problems exporting.

Why is the person I invited not found?

An invitation matches an account by email. Ask that person to register first. Read more: Problems working together.

Who can see my videos and my annotations?

Only the people in that project. The owner decides who joins. Read more: Role.

Why did my annotations vanish after I reloaded?

Your role on that project is viewer. A viewer can read but not annotate. Read more: Problems working together.

Accounts

Why do the admin pages say I am not allowed?

Admin pages need an admin role. They also need a session under 7 days old. Read more: Problems signing in.

What is an AI key for, and who pays?

An AI key lets GRAPE MARS use your Mistral or Google Gemini account, and you pay that provider. No AI feature you can reach today uses the key. Read more: the guide "How AI keys work and who pays".

Can I delete my account?

Ask your administrator to delete it. The Delete My Account button in Settings signs you out but does not yet remove your data. Read more: the guide "Delete your account".
