Part of speech

The part of speech is the word class of a word. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are parts of speech. The same word can belong to one class in one line and to another class in the next line. GRAPE MARS keeps one part of speech for each word in a transcript.

Example: A teacher says "book" 14 times across 2 lessons. In "open your book" it is a noun. In "book a slot in the lab" it is a verb. Tagging stores a part of speech for each of those 14 words. A search for the noun "book" now returns 11 hits, and the 3 verb uses stay out.

Why it matters in GRAPE MARS

Tagging stores the part of speech of every word in the transcript. In the Concordance module you can search by part of speech in word mode. That way you can find all the verbs a teacher uses, without typing each word by hand.
