How live sync works

Learn what your colleagues see while you work in the same video, and what they do not see.

Before you start

  • Open the video from the project page, so that it opens inside a project.
  • Invite the other people first. Live sync only reaches people on the same project.

Steps

  1. Open the video in the annotator. The dot in the toolbar turns green and reads Live.
  2. Drag on a track to make an annotation. Your colleague sees the new bar in 1 or 2 seconds.
  3. Click the bar twice, fast. A small box opens next to it.
  4. Select a new sub-type from the list. Their copy changes too.
  5. Press Delete. The bar disappears on their screen as well.

Live sync carries 3 things about your annotations:

  • new annotations
  • changes to annotations
  • deleted annotations

It also carries who is in the video. See See who is working in the video.

Your colleagues do not see your speakers, your transcript, your tracks or your annotation types until they reload the page. GRAPE MARS does not show their mouse, and it does not show which bar they have picked.

Live sync is not how your work is saved. Your own browser saves each change to the server by itself. Read Autosave. So a dropped connection never loses your work. It only means the others must reload to receive the changes.

GRAPE MARS does not merge 2 changes to the same bar. The change that arrives last is the one on screen. Give each person their own track or their own video, and you avoid this.

Check it worked

The toolbar tells you the state of the connection. Live means your changes go out now. Connecting… and Reconnecting… mean GRAPE MARS is trying; it waits a little longer after each try, and stops after 10 tries. Then the sync indicator and the In this session panel disappear from the toolbar. Reload the page to reconnect. Session expired — refresh means your sign-in is too old: reload the page. If you move to another tab, GRAPE MARS closes the connection and opens it again when you come back.
