Read a concordance result

Understand each part of a line of hits, and watch the moment in the video without leaving the page.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Open a Concordance module that has hits. The lines fill the list.
  2. Click the arrow at the left of a line. A small player opens under that line.
  3. Wait for the player to start. It jumps to the moment and stops 5 seconds later.
  4. Click the arrow again to close it. The player folds away.

Check it worked

The player shows the right moment of the right video. Only one line opens at a time, so a second click closes the first.

Each line has the same parts, from left to right: the video name, the time as mm:ss, a colored chip, the coder, and the speaker. Under them sits the text. The words on each side are gray, and the hit itself is dark and bold.

The chip means 2 different things. In Annotations mode it is the track. In Words mode it is the word class of the hit.

Some lines carry the words "segment-level" in italics. That video has no word-level timing, so the words around the hit come from the whole segment, and the time is less exact. See precision.

A line can show no words at all. That happens when no transcript covers those seconds. GRAPE MARS leaves the context empty rather than show you far-off words.

"Unattributed" in the speaker place means the mark has no speaker on it. That label appears only in Annotations mode.

In Words mode, a hit has no coder and no speaker. GRAPE MARS shows a dash (—) in both places instead.
